10 songs to buy if you need to cry about a lost love...
"nude" by Radiohead This song has ridiculous layering to it. Slow heartbreaking melodies, lyrics that make you think. Radiohead's front man originally wrote this song in 1997 and has been performing it in concerts, but just recorded it for the In Rainbows Album.
"stay or leave" Dave Matthews This is a story song about reflecting on all the good times, but alas the romance is gone. "I want you not to go, but you should, it was good as good goes"-(lyrics from song) That says it all. the song has a cool clock ticking type beat. I love me some DMB, what can I say!
"Leaving on a Jet Plane" Chantal Kreviazuk version yes, this was in Armagedeon, sorry, I know its cheesy. But don't hate the song for it. Saw Chantal in concert once, she has a pure beautiful voice, and she does a great version of this song. Plus, this song always takes me back to 1998. All the possibilities ahead, now in hindsight are funny, naive, and sweet, like this song.
"She Runs Away" Duncan Sheik I hate to admit I am a sucker for this guy. One of my favorite songs. I am not sure why I always feel self pity when I hear this. When I heard this song, it was different than the grunge rock going on at the time. It was my first taste of modern folk music.
"samson" Regina Spektor First, her voice is SO beautiful. The melody is achingly beautiful. This is a "true love" lost song. As in he died, or circumstances will keep you apart forever. You would and could never hate him, or be bitter. Whaaaaa!!!
"almost lover" A Fine Frenzy lyrics make this song. lost love, that never really happened. "should have known you'd bring me heartache" The piano and a voice full of sorrow, this song comes from her heart, and you can here the heaviness in the song. She got trampled on, and I think he might of walked away untouched.
"10,000 miles" Mary Chapin Carpenter this song is in the movie fly away home. It not only made me bawl my eyes out, it made me ugly cry. It made the scene in the movie a peaceful but poignant once. This song is Prettty lonnnnnng though, sorry. The lyrics are like a Celtic poem, and the melodies range from sweeping orchestral, to soft horns, with that deep lullaby voice Mary Chapin Carpenter.
"So Sorry" Feist This song is just about not saying sorry. Very folk music music.Tone is light and reflective. Exactly like when you step back from the anger and say, wow I should have just been humble and said sorry.
"here with me" Dido this was her most popular song, it was featured on the show Roswell that played in the late 90's I included this because it is one of those songs that to me talks about a fresh heartbreak. I havent had my heart broken in a long time, thankfully, but this song always causes me to recall that heavy heart.
"The Sea and the Rhythm" Iron and Wine I will feature this band a lot because I absolutely LOVE this band. As a matter of fact my all time favorite song is by them. Smart, beautiful, and poetic lyrics, with amazing melodies. You could turn these songs into a book of poetry to study, and ponder. This particular song is just nostalgic, like all lost love.
BONUS:
(Not on mix)
"There is no such thing as love" The Dears This is an alternative band that has a little bit of radiohead influence, with the melodic undertones and the organs slow troop throughout. The main singing doesnt come in for awhile, like, oops I forgot to sing im so depressed. "let me give it to you straight, straight from the arrow" Try out some of there other songs too. They have some really great tunes.
What is your favorite self-pity lost love song? WHY? make sure to include the artist!
